Michael Crees stars with third fastest time at BTCC’s official season launch
BTC Racing team-mate Josh Cook competitive despite frustrating day
Touring car rookie Jade Edwards impresses with top 10 performances
Brackley team BTC Racing enjoyed an exceptionally strong and productive day of running at Silverstone National Circuit today, Thursday, 22nd April, during the pre-season Kwik-Fit British Touring Car Championship ‘Media Day’ test.
Marking the first, and only, officially timed outing of the pre-season ahead of the BTCC curtain-raiser just two weeks from now, the headline performance came from Michael Crees in the No.777 Honda Civic Type-R FK8 with the third fastest time overall – less than 0.2 seconds shy of the outright pace.
Team-mate Josh Cook ended the test 11th on the combined times from both sessions in his No.66 Honda Civic, only 0.3 seconds adrift of ‘Creesy’, while touring car rookie Jade Edwards was 19th on combined times during her first official outing in the No.99 PHSC with BTC Racing Honda.
Crees was rapid all day in the Northamptonshire sunshine, ending the three-hour morning run as the fastest of the BTC trio with a time of 57.617 seconds (102.49 mph) to place fifth overall and fourth of the Independents Trophy competitors. In the afternoon, he sliced 0.3 seconds off his previous best to lap in 57.307 seconds (103.05 mph) – and headed the timesheets into the final half an hour.
Multiple BTCC race winner Cook, who spent the day chasing set-up, was eighth overall and seventh of the Independents with a best lap of 57.657 seconds (102.42 mph) in the morning. In the second session he was 10th fastest with a consistent 57.653 seconds (102.43 mph).
Edwards, the sole female racer in the BTCC and first to contest a full season since 2007, was an impressive 12th in session one – ninth Independent – with a lap of 57.747 seconds (102.26 mph) as she racked up the miles. During the afternoon she posted a time of 57.822 seconds (102.13 mph).
Michael Crees – BTC Racing Driver, No.777:
“It doesn’t matter what anyone says down the grid, to finish top on Media Day – everyone is trying to do that. So, to end the day top three is fantastic. We put one set of new tyres on in the afternoon and that’s the time we did. I set a fast enough lap time to have been on pole here last year, so now I’m looking forward to Thruxton to see what we can really do. There’s more to come.”
Josh Cook – BTC Racing Driver, No.66:
“We didn’t get a clean run at all really, we went in the wrong direction a bit out of the box this morning and it took the momentum out of the day. It wasn’t the most efficient of days for us, but sometimes it goes that way. It’s not just about what’s on the stopwatch though, it’s also about what you learn. We’ve got another test coming up at Snetterton next week, hopefully that will be better.
Jade Edwards – PHSC with BTC Racing Driver, No.99:
“Overall it was a very positive day, we tried a lot of different things in the afternoon and made a lot of changes so the optimum lap time wasn’t what we were going for. We’re leaving Silverstone very happy campers! Top 10 this morning, and we were top 10 for a good chunk of the afternoon as well, and it’s only my second day in the car so I’m still learning massively every time I go out.”
Steve Dudman – BTC Racing Owner and Team Principal:
“I’m very pleased by the job everyone has done today, I feel it’s gone exceptionally well overall. Michael had a cracking day, Josh’s day was mixed unfortunately, but he worked hard as always, and Jade has excelled really and was extremely strong all day. We’ve made a number of changes over the winter so I’m very happy with how everything has gone, and feeling very confident for Thruxton.”
